Glossary
Definitions of terms we use on Pro Bible. If you are new to reading the Bible online, this page can help you understand the words you see on the site.
Translation / Version
A translation is the Bible text rendered from the original languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek) into another language (e.g. English). A version often means the same thing—a named edition of the Bible, such as the King James Version (KJV) or the New International Version (NIV). On Pro Bible we use "version" in the dropdowns to mean the translation you choose (e.g. KJV, NIV, Reina-Valera).
KJV (King James Version)
The King James Version, also called the Authorized Version, is an English translation of the Bible first published in 1611. It uses older, formal language and is one of the most widely used translations in the English-speaking world. On Pro Bible you can select it from the Version dropdown when English is chosen.
NIV (New International Version)
The New International Version is a modern English translation that uses contemporary language. It is often chosen for readability and for study. Like the KJV, it is available on Pro Bible when you select English as the language.
Old Testament / New Testament
The Bible is divided into two main parts. The Old Testament contains books written before the birth of Jesus (the Law, history, wisdom, and prophets). The New Testament contains the Gospels, Acts, letters (Epistles), and Revelation—books that tell of Jesus and the early church. "Testament" here means "covenant" or "agreement."
Book
The Bible is a collection of 66 books (e.g. Genesis, Psalms, Matthew). Each book is divided into chapters and verses. On the Read page, the "Book" dropdown lets you choose which book you want to read.
Chapter
Each book of the Bible is divided into chapters (numbered 1, 2, 3, …). For example, Genesis has 50 chapters, and the Gospel of John has 21. After you select a book on the Read page, the Chapter dropdown lists the chapters for that book.
Verse
Chapters are further divided into verses—short, numbered segments (e.g. Genesis 1:1 is the first verse of the first chapter of Genesis). On Pro Bible you can leave the Verse dropdown as "All verses" to see the whole chapter, or pick a single verse for a focused view.
Gospel
The four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—are the books that tell the life, teaching, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. They are the first four books of the New Testament.
Daily verse
On Pro Bible, the Daily Verse is one verse shown each day for the language and version you choose. It is selected automatically by date so that everyone using the same translation sees the same verse that day. You can find it on the Daily Verse page.
